Several major routes into Islamabad and Rawalpindi are closed or restricted. The Islamabad road closures began at 11pm on 23 September, per the Islamabad Traffic Police announcement, and run until further notice ahead of a march planned for 27 September.

M-1 Closed Between Swabi and Islamabad
The NHMP Travel Advisory lists the M-1 from Swabi to the Islamabad end as closed in both directions, with the reason given as the law-and-order situation. This is the main Islamabad–Peshawar corridor, so journeys in either direction are affected. Our earlier M-1 closure announcement covered the initial notice.
Is the M-2 Closed?
This needs stating precisely, because both wrong answers are circulating.
The latest advisory does not list a full closure of the Lahore–Islamabad M-2. What it does list is a restriction on northbound heavy transport vehicles entering from Kot Momin towards Islamabad. So the M-2 is not shut — but if you are driving an HTV northbound, you are affected.
Rawalpindi and Attock Routes
Beyond the motorways, the N-5 GT Road is reported closed at Attock Khurd, the Rawalpindi–Kohat Road at Khushal Garh, and the Abbottabad–Hassanabdal Road at Jhari Kas. Security arrangements are concentrated around Rawalpindi and Attock. The official announcement of the closures lists the full set of routes.

Confirm your entry point works before setting off, rather than discovering it at the toll plaza.
Allow extra time and expect congestion on whatever remains open — closed corridors push traffic onto the alternatives.
Postpone non-essential travel through the affected corridors, and follow official diversions rather than improvising.

Final Thoughts
The Islamabad road closures cover the M-1, M-14, parts of E-35 and the GT Road, along with connecting routes near Rawalpindi and Attock, while the M-2 stays open with heavy-traffic limits northbound. None of it has a stated reopening time. Check NHMP and traffic police updates immediately before each journey that is the only reliable source while this continues.
