An electric scooter battery fire broke out while the scooter was charging in the parking area at Government College Women University Faisalabad on 30 September 2026. The fire spread to a nearby university bus. No injuries or deaths were reported.

Nobody Knows Why It Happened
This deserves stating clearly, because speculation fills the gap otherwise. The cause has not been established.
Not disclosed: the scooter's make or model, the charger used, the battery's age or condition, whether it had been damaged previously, the electrical connection it was plugged into, or the state of its battery management system.
Any of those could matter. None has been confirmed. We are not going to name a brand or a cause on the basis of nothing, and you should be wary of anyone who does.
How Battery Fires Happen in General
Lithium-ion batteries can fail in a process called thermal runaway, where one cell overheats, which heats its neighbours, which overheat in turn. Once it starts, it is very hard to stop, and it produces considerable heat and smoke — published research on e-scooter battery fires has studied exactly this behaviour and how fire spreads to nearby materials.
Known triggers include physical damage to cells, manufacturing defects, incompatible or faulty chargers, electrical faults and overheating.
None of this establishes what happened in Faisalabad. It is background on how such fires can occur, not a finding about this one.
If a Battery Starts Smoking
Worth knowing before you need it. If a charging battery starts hissing, swelling, smoking or giving off a sharp chemical smell:
Get away from it and get others away. Do not try to carry it outside.
Call Rescue 1122. A lithium battery fire is not something to tackle with a bucket of water or a household extinguisher — it can reignite, and the smoke alone is dangerous in an enclosed space. The instinct to deal with it yourself is the one to resist.
Charging Safely
Use the charger that came with the vehicle. Cheap replacements and mismatched chargers are a recognised risk, and the saving is not worth it.
Never charge a damaged battery. Swelling, cracks, leaks, dents or a battery that has taken a hard knock — stop using it and have it checked.
Charge away from anything that burns, and away from exits. The Faisalabad fire spread because a bus was nearby; a scooter charging beside cardboard, cloth or fuel in a narrow corridor is the same problem on a domestic scale.
Let it cool first. Charging a battery immediately after hard use, in hot weather, adds heat on top of heat.
Check the socket and wiring. Loose connections, improvised extensions and overloaded boards cause problems independent of the battery itself.
For Institutions With Parking Areas
One thing the Faisalabad incident shows plainly: a designated charging point sited away from parked vehicles would have changed the outcome. As universities, offices and apartment buildings add charging facilities, where those points sit relative to parked vehicles, exits and fire equipment matters as much as the number of sockets. The university's fire-safety system and Rescue 1122's response are why this was a property loss and nothing worse.
Why This Matters Now
Punjab is preparing to distribute 100,000 electric bikes to students from November under the Punjab electric bike scheme. Most recipients will be charging at home, in hostels and in university parking areas — many of them first-time vehicle owners.
That is not an argument against electric two-wheelers. It is an argument for charging guidance reaching people alongside the vehicles, which is far cheaper than the alternative.
Should This Change Your Mind About EVs?
No — one incident with an unestablished cause does not make electric vehicles unsafe, and petrol vehicles catch fire too. What it does is underline that charging is a process worth doing properly. Our EV buying guide in Pakistan, and our coverage of EV charging stations in Pakistan, charging on Pakistan motorways and electric vehicles in Pakistan cover the practical side of ownership.
Final Thoughts
An electric scooter battery fire while charging destroyed a university bus and damaged other scooters at GCWUF Faisalabad, with no casualties. The cause remains unestablished, so treat any confident explanation with suspicion. The useful response is practical: correct charger, undamaged battery, charging away from anything that burns — and if a battery starts smoking, move away and call Rescue 1122 rather than tackling it yourself.
