The Jaecoo J7 was Britain's best-selling new car in September 2026, with 10,813 registrations its second number-one finish of the year. It beat the Tesla Model 3 and knocked the Ford Puma off the top of the chart.
For buyers in Pakistan this is more than a foreign statistic. The same model is on sale here, and it has had a busy few weeks of its own. But the UK result needs one piece of context that most coverage has left out, and we will get to it.
Jaecoo 7 or Jaecoo J7? Same Car, Two Names
Worth clearing up before anything else, because it causes real confusion when you search for reviews. In the United Kingdom the car is sold and badged as the Jaecoo 7 — no "J". In Pakistan, and in its home market, it is the Jaecoo J7. Same vehicle, different badge. So when a British review praises the "Jaecoo 7", it is talking about the car you can buy here.
Jaecoo J7 UK Sales: The September Numbers
| September 2026, UK | Registrations |
|---|---|
| 1. Jaecoo 7 | 10,813 |
| 2. Tesla Model 3 | 9,929 |
| 3. Ford Puma | 6,958 |
Figure of 10,813 from OMODA & JAECOO's own UK release; Carwow's breakdown of the SMMT data reports 10,814. We have used the manufacturer's number.
The wider picture matters too. The UK market grew about 12% year on year in September for its strongest result in nine years, and the brand's combined OMODA & JAECOO registrations reached 22,296 up 106% for roughly 6.37% of the market. Full registration data is published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
The Detail Most Coverage Left Out
This was the Jaecoo J7's second number one of 2026. The first was March. Here is the part worth knowing: March and September are the UK's two number-plate change months, and they are by a wide margin the biggest sales months of the British year. The manufacturer's own release describes September as its "second plate-change No.1 of 2026".
So the car has topped the chart in the two months when the most cars are sold — and not, so far, in an ordinary month. That is a meaningful distinction, and anyone telling you this car is simply "Britain's best-selling car" is skipping it.
It should not be read as taking the achievement away, either. Beating the Tesla Model 3 and the Ford Puma in the busiest month of the year is harder, not easier, because that is when every manufacturer pushes hardest. Across the full year to date it sits second overall — a genuinely strong position for a brand this new to the market.
Why Is the Jaecoo J7 Selling So Well?
What follows is our reading of the data, not a stated explanation from the company. No manufacturer has published a breakdown of why buyers chose it.
One likely reason is the powertrain mix. Across OMODA & JAECOO's UK registrations in September, plug-in hybrids accounted for 55.7%, with full hybrids at 10.4%, battery-electric at 10.0% and petrol at 23.9%. That is a lineup weighted heavily towards plug-in hybrids at a moment when British buyers appear to want electric running without committing to a purely electric car.
The second likely factor is simply equipment for the money — generous standard kit in a family SUV shape at a price that undercuts established rivals. This is the same pattern that has reshaped the mainstream market here, and it belongs to the wider story of Chinese car brands in Pakistan and elsewhere.
Jaecoo J7 Price in Pakistan and Bookings
Pakistan gets one J7 variant, the plug-in hybrid — listed as the J7 SHS-P in some material and J7 Premium in the official price list. It is priced at Rs 9,999,000, and it reportedly took over 3,000 bookings in its first 40 days.
The published figures for the Pakistani car are 341 hp and 525 Nm, with a claimed 90+ km of pure-electric range and 1,200+ km combined. The distributor describes it as "Pakistan's No.1 PHEV" — that is the company's claim, not an independently verified market position.
One caution on those numbers: they are the figures published for the Pakistani SHS-P. We have not seen confirmation that the UK Jaecoo 7 is specified identically, so do not assume a British review's performance notes transfer exactly. The Price Move Worth Noticing: J7 Down, J5 Up
Something unusual happened in the Jaecoo lineup here over the last few weeks, and it is easy to miss if you only look at one model.
| Variant | Was | Now | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| J7 Premium | 10,499,000 | 9,999,000 | −500,000 |
| J5 HEV Comfort | 6,699,000 | 6,999,000 | +300,000 |
| J5 HEV Premium | 7,699,000 | 7,999,000 | +300,000 |
All figures in rupees. J7 revision effective 14 September 2026; J5 revisions effective 1 October 2026.
The J7 got cheaper by Rs 500,000 while both J5 variants got dearer by Rs 300,000 — and both moves were attributed to the same new tax regime. No breakdown was published explaining how one tax change pushed two models in opposite directions, so we are reporting the attribution rather than endorsing it.
The practical effect is what matters to you. The gap between the top J5 and the J7 has narrowed from Rs 2,800,000 to Rs 2,000,000 — the step up to the plug-in hybrid is Rs 800,000 smaller than it was a month ago. Our running coverage of Pakistan car sales tracks how the market is shifting around moves like this.
Jaecoo J7 vs Jaecoo J5 in Pakistan
| J7 (PHEV) | J5 (HEV) | |
|---|---|---|
| Power | 341 hp | 221 hp |
| Torque | 525 Nm | 295 Nm |
| Plug-in? | Yes — 90+ km EV claimed | No — 1.83 kWh self-charging |
| Price | Rs 9,999,000 | Rs 6,999,000 / 7,999,000 |
The Jaecoo J5 is the smaller, simpler proposition: a 1.5-litre turbocharged hybrid with 221 hp and 295 Nm, front-wheel drive, 0–100 km/h in a claimed 7.9 seconds and a claimed 18.8 km per litre. The Premium adds 18-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a 13.2-inch touchscreen, an 8-inch digital cluster, six airbags, ADAS and a 540-degree camera.
So Rs 2,000,000 separates the top J5 from the J7, and it buys 120 hp and 230 Nm more plus the ability to plug in. Whether that is worth it comes down to one practical question: can you charge at home? A plug-in hybrid you never plug in is a heavier, costlier petrol hybrid — the J5 would make more sense for that owner.
Final Thoughts
The Jaecoo J7 topping UK car sales with 10,813 registrations is a real result, and worth knowing if you are considering one here — a car selling in those volumes in a mature, competitive market tends to have its problems found quickly and publicly. Just hold the two caveats in mind: both of its 2026 wins came in plate-change months, and the UK Jaecoo 7's specification has not been confirmed as identical to the Pakistani J7. Locally, the more useful news is quieter — the J7 is Rs 500,000 cheaper than it was, the J5 is Rs 300,000 dearer, and the gap between them has closed by Rs 800,000. Confirm current pricing with the dealership before you commit to either.
