New Mitsubishi Pajero Attracts 5,500 Orders as Buyers Leave Rivals

Mitsubishi Pajero pre-orders in Japan reached about 5,500 units in the first 28 days, which Mitsubishi says has already surpassed its sales target for the whole fiscal year.

The car does not reach dealerships until 17 December. So a twelve-month target was cleared in under a month, before anyone could buy one.

That much is official. Some of the other figures circulating are not, and the difference is worth knowing.

A Year's Target in 28 Days

Mitsubishi opened pre-orders on 1 October. Its announcement of 29 October put the count at roughly 5,500 as of the previous day.

That is 28 days of order taking. Work it through and the rate is about 196 orders a day.

Mitsubishi's fiscal year runs from April 2026 to March 2027. It says the pre-orders have surpassed the sales target for that period.

And there are another 50 days of pre-ordering before the car goes on sale.

One honest caveat, though. Mitsubishi does not publish what the target was.

Surpassing a target you have not disclosed is impressive but unquantified. A conservative target makes the headline easier.

The 80 Percent Figure Needs Unpacking

This is the number doing the rounds, and it does not appear in Mitsubishi's public release at all.

It comes through trade reporting, which attributes it to Mitsubishi. So the figure does originate with the company, just not from the announcement we read.

The wording also matters. The reporting says nearly 80 percent of buyers are switching from another brand, which is not the same as a flat 80.

And there is a wrinkle in what switching means here. Some of those buyers are returning Mitsubishi customers who had moved to a rival and come back.

So part of that share is win-backs rather than pure conquest. A different commercial story from taking new customers off a competitor.

What Buyers Are Trading In

This is the most revealing part of the reporting, and it says a lot about who the car is for.

Among buyers who already own a Mitsubishi, the most common trade-ins are the Delica D:5, the Outlander and the previous-generation Pajero.

The car is also pulling people out of other rugged off-roaders and ordinary SUVs, which you would expect.

Then there is the surprise. It is also taking buyers out of large minivans.

Someone moving from a minivan into a ladder-frame 4x4 is not shopping for off-road ability.

They want space, seats and presence. Which suggests the new Pajero is being bought as a large family car first.

Seven in Ten Want the Dearest One

Four trims are offered in Japan. They are the GLS, the GSR, the Exceed and the Super Exceed.

Reporting puts roughly 70 percent of orders on the Super Exceed, the flagship. Treat that one carefully, because no source is named for it.

What is verifiable is the price span. The range opens at 6,193,000 yen and the Super Exceed is 7,950,800 yen.

Japanese price Yen
Entry trim 6,193,000
Super Exceed 7,950,800
Difference 1,757,800, or 28.4% more

So most orders are reportedly for a car that costs 28 percent more than the cheapest way into one.

We are not publishing prices for the two middle trims. The figures circulating for them are not in Mitsubishi's release and we could not verify them.

Nor are we converting into rupees, because that needs an exchange rate we would be guessing at.

The Torque Figure Is Not One Number

The engine is a 2.4-litre clean diesel turbo with an eight-speed automatic, and the headline torque is 480 Nm.

Read Mitsubishi's footnote, though. It says 470 Nm on select specifications.

So 480 does not apply across the range. Worth knowing before comparing a brochure figure with a rival.

But the number that actually matters is one almost nobody quotes. Mitsubishi states that peak torque runs from 1,750 to 2,500 rpm.

That is a 750 rpm plateau, and it starts low. For an off-road vehicle that is more useful than the peak itself.

Crawling over rocks, pulling a trailer and climbing a slope all happen at low revs. Torque you can reach just above idle is torque you can use.

What About the Land Cruiser?

The comparison is unavoidable, because the two sit in the same part of the market with the same ladder-frame approach.

We are not going to put specifications side by side here. We have not verified current Land Cruiser figures from Toyota, and a comparison built on unchecked numbers is worse than none.

What the order data suggests is that Mitsubishi has found buyers who wanted this kind of vehicle and had limited choice.

Five years without a Pajero left a gap. The pre-order rate reads like that gap closing.

Will It Come to Pakistan?

Nothing has been announced, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Mitsubishi has confirmed a Japanese launch date and Japanese prices. There is no official Pakistan launch date and no local price.

Any rupee figure you see for this car right now is somebody's estimate rather than a quoted price.

The older Pajero has a long history here, so interest is understandable. That is not the same as availability.

We will update this article when there is an official announcement to report rather than a rumour.

Final Thoughts

The figure worth remembering is not 5,500 but 28 days. Mitsubishi cleared a full year's target in under a month, with the car still 50 days from the showroom floor. That says the demand was already there waiting.

Just keep the confirmed and the reported apart. The orders, the engine and the launch date come from Mitsubishi. The buyer-switching and trim-mix percentages come from trade reporting, and the one about the flagship has no named source at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pre-orders has the new Pajero taken?

About 5,500 in Japan, counted to 28 October 2026. Mitsubishi says that already exceeds its sales target for a fiscal year running to March 2027. It has not published what the target was.

How quickly did those orders arrive?

Pre-orders opened on 1 October, so the total covers 28 days. That works out near 196 orders a day. Deliveries do not begin until 17 December, leaving another 50 days of ordering.

Are 80 percent of buyers really switching brands?

That figure is reported rather than published by Mitsubishi, and the wording is nearly 80 percent. It reaches us through trade reporting that credits the company. Some of those buyers are also former Mitsubishi owners returning after a spell elsewhere.

What are buyers trading in?

Among existing Mitsubishi owners, mostly the Delica D:5, the Outlander and the old Pajero. Beyond that it is drawing from rugged off-roaders, ordinary SUVs and, more unusually, large minivans.

Which trim is most popular?

The flagship Super Exceed is said to account for around 70 percent of orders. We would treat that number with some caution, because the reporting carrying it names no source.

What does it cost in Japan?

Entry grades start from 6,193,000 yen, while the flagship asks 7,950,800 yen. That is a 28.4 percent step. Prices for the two grades in between are circulating but absent from Mitsubishi's release, so we left them out.

What engine does it use?

A turbocharged 2.4-litre clean diesel, driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. Peak torque reads 480 Nm, though Mitsubishi notes 470 Nm on certain specifications. The figure is therefore not uniform across the range.

Where is that torque available?

From 1,750 to 2,500 rpm, which is the specification worth caring about. A wide plateau starting just above idle is what makes a vehicle good at towing and low-speed climbing.

When does it go on sale?

Mitsubishi has confirmed 17 December for dealerships across Japan. Everything before that date is pre-ordering rather than buying.

Is it coming to Pakistan?

No launch has been announced, and no local price exists. Mitsubishi has confirmed Japan only so far. Any rupee figure you come across is an estimate rather than a quoted price.
