Now, as the eighth-generation Elantra takes shape, signs point to the next Elantra N breaking from that formula with a larger engine under the hood. What We Know So Far

Hyundai unveiled the redesigned, eighth-generation Elantra (badged the Avante in South Korea) and made it clear a performance-focused N variant is on the way. The new car is longer and wider than its predecessor, with a wider track that leaves more room in the engine bay and under the fenders — exactly the kind of packaging change a bigger engine would need.

Biermann has said he made sure the Elantra's platform could accommodate Hyundai's larger 2.5-liter turbocharged engine before he stepped back from his day-to-day role, calling it a near-certainty for the next generation car in markets like the United States and Australia.

That same 2.5-liter turbo four already does duty elsewhere in Hyundai's lineup. It makes up to 290 hp and 311 lb-ft in the Sonata N Line, and up to 300 hp in the related Genesis G70. An N-tuned version, built specifically for the next Elantra N, would likely push beyond those numbers once Hyundai's engineers get through with it.

How Much Power to Expect

Hyundai has also confirmed it tested a "next-generation high-performance powertrain" at the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race, which suggests the final engine tune may go beyond simply borrowing the existing 2.5-liter unit wholesale. Some reports even point to a hybrid-assisted setup pairing the turbo engine with an electric motor, though a manual gearbox option is expected to stick around for purists.

A Wider, More Aggressive Design

Packaging a bigger engine goes hand in hand with a bigger body. Hyundai says the new Elantra measures around 1,855 mm wide, with a track that has grown by roughly 30 mm over the outgoing model.
